ARTICLE | "Women Changing the World" Arline Malakian
Toronto fashion photographer Arline Malakian is one of just a handful of women in a male-dominated profession who has increasingly commanded worldwide attention. Her unique perspective of female models as "fragile beauties exuding inner strength" rises from a dual vision of photography as an intuitive process rooted in a mastery of technique.
"My intent is to create a connection between the image and the viewer that transcends esthetics and provokes ideas, feelings, reveries of what a photograph means - the crystallization of a moment in time, the ephemeral made concrete," says the Armenian-born Malakian who now calls Canada her adopted home. It is that quasi-philosophical approach that has attracted commercial and editorial clients in cities as far-ranging as Paris, Milan, Munich, New York, Miami and Los Angeles, where her work has graced the pages of Elle, Martha Stewart Living, R.P.M, Ocean Drive, Crome and Grazia, among other fashion publications.
At home in Toronto the 47 year-old Malakian's editorial work appears in Canada's biggest selling magazine titles such as Fashion, Flare, Chatelaine, Elle Canada, Wedding Bells, Lush and Highrise. Doubling as creative director and national ad campaign manager for a number of leading Canadian fashion labels, including Alfred Sung bridal and Franco Mirabelli, Malakian recently collaborated on an hour-long documentary on beauty produced by Dove for the W network.
